Handpans and Cymatics

Cymatics is the study of visible effects of sound and vibration. Handpans are an interesting case study from the viewpoint of cymatics as they have the ability to generate some simple and complex cymatics. Below are a few examples. A liquid sitting in the dome of a center note generates some beautiful visuals. Adding fine sand while tuning can give the tuner a visual representation of where the material is, and isn’t, vibrating. You can see the nodal lines as it is where the material isn’t vibrating and where the note’s borders are.

A single string vibration is a great representation of a 1 dimensional standing wave. All the videos below are 2 dimensional representations of standing waves.
